I was recently very flattered to have ‘Beethoven’s Pathetic Ghost’ played on PBS radio’s, experimental music show ‘Interstellar Overdrive’:
Beethoven’s Pathetic Ghost is an electro-acoustic composition oriented around a re-mix, or rearranging of the first 5 chords from Beethoven’s ‘Sonata Pathetique’. This piece was achieved through the process of extending the register, voicing and order of the chords through several octaves. With a tape-recorder, I recorded the decay of the chords on my parent’s old, out of tune, moth-eaten piano. I then applied various electronic processes and structural considerations to the collated chords. I guess I chose the sonata to work with, as I spent years practicing and never mastering it due to its difficulty and my adolescent laziness. Despite this frustrating experience, the first couple of chords have always had a deep emotional resonance in my memory of my adolescence. Ultimately, this work is about the decay of memory, cramped spaces, nostalgia and the impression a piece of music can leave on a developing mind & soul. Don’t get the name wrong, I fucking love Beethoven.
